Mental Focus

Mental focus is said to be one of the most effective healing modalities availabe to us.  It has been proven that a person's cognitive and emotional processes have a profound effect of our health.  When you meditate, your rational thought processes, housed in your cortex, begin a dialogue with your brain's emotional centers, the hippocampus and amygdala, both of which are in your limbic system.  When the cortex and limbic system agree that it is okay to relax, they send the message to the hypothalamus, which connects the brain to the endrocrine system.  This releases calming neurotransmitters and hormones which calm the body.  The immune system then kicks in releasing its own molecules of information which completes the healing process.  You then shift into a relaxed alpha brain wave pattern, and your nervous system is dominated by the parasympathetic branch.  When this happens even more nerve signals are sent to your organs and glands of immunity.  You then reach the ideal condition for healing(Khalsa, 2001).
Disease is exacerbated by negative mental conditioning and can be impacted successfully with positive mental conditioning.  Try repeating the mantra, "healthy am i, happy am i, holy am i" and see if it improves yokur disposition.

I saw an old rerun of Ellen, and Swami Conrad (model turned yogi) was the guest. He was promoting his new book.  This quick interview covered the basic philosophies of yoga.  He had the audience stand on one foot and close their eyes to test their balance.  He explained that a lack of balance had more to do with a busy mind then their physical abilities.  The philosophy being when the mind is still,  so is the body.  There were a lot of monkey brains out there because people were falling like dominos.   Try it.  And then, try it again after taking a few centering breaths.

Attended a seminar on hormones by Lorna Vanderhaeghe,  the author of "Sexy Hormones".   Every woman should read this book and pass it on to their daughters.   It is also relevant for men.  Here are some of the interesting facts  Lorna presented and they are certainly food for thought.  Did you know:  that cholesterol medicine wreaks havoc on your hormones, that many of the organs in your body secrete hormones not just your ovaries ( the body has a back up system should you have to have your ovaries removed), that how well you sail through menopause is dependent on how healthy your adrenals are, that never ending menopause is due to thyroid imbalance, that your liver decides if you will get cancer, and that salt is not the culprit in high blood pressure but low magnesium.

Her suggestions:  eat more cruciferous vegetables, have sex twice a week to prevent vaginal atrophy, avoid constipation ( you should poop at least one 12 incher per day), have your thyroid checked and ask your doctor for a copy of the results (TSH should be between .05 and 2), reduce stress ( yoga), and walk briskly 30 minutes per day (stops hot flashes by 50 percent).

When I am shopping for produce and I am paying a dollar extra for strawberries I often ask myself if I really need to buy organic.  Lorna Vanderhagen was adamant in her lecture that we should all be eating organic as pesticides cause cancer.  If you can't afford or can't find organic produce, the following information may be helpful.
Produce with thick skins can be purchased non-organic.  Pesticides residues do not appear in the flesh.  Examples would be avocados or bananas.
Anything grown close to the ground should be organic. For example, herbs like basil, and salad greens.
Any vegetable that grows in the ground should be pruchased organically.  Did you know that carrots absorb so many heavy metals, they are used as a throwaway crop to rid  a field of lead or arsenic contamination?
Very few pesticides are used to grow broccoli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts and garlic.  Basically, pesticides don't work well on these crops.
Tropical fruits, like pineapple, have very little pesticide residue.  On the other hand, celery (the most likely plant to contain pesticides), cherries, cucumber and imported grapes are highly toxic.  Many are sprayed with fungicides and herbicides, as well as, organophosphate pesticides are highly likely to be toxic.
Dairy, meat and chicken should be organic. Seafood, can not really be certified organic but it is smart to avoid farmed fish and seafood as the fish are fed antibiotics, chicken litter, dyes and additives.
Buying exclusively organic is not always feasible so it is good to know which products are safer to eat non-organically. .
